
Village of South Amherst Beautification Committee Guidelines and Operating Understanding
Purpose and Mission Statement:
The Beautification Committee of the Village of South Amherst is being formed with the mission of enhancing and maintaining the visual appeal and overall charm of our community. This citizen-led group will focus on improving public spaces through flower planting, weed control, light landscaping, and general beautification projects.
The goal is to foster community pride, create a welcoming environment for visitors and residents alike, and reflect the small-town charm that defines South Amherst.
Committee Overview:

Chairperson: To be appointed by the Mayor or selected by committee vote
Committee Members: Comprised initially of local residents who have voluntarily expressed interest in gardening and community beautification
Number of Members: Open-ended, starting with 5-7 interested residents
Primary Responsibilities:
- Seasonal Flower Planting:
Selection and planting of flowers in designated public spaces such as municipal building entrances, village signs, and welcome areas.
Use of native and seasonal plants to ensure sustainability and reduce maintenance needs.
- Weed Control and Light Landscaping:
Regular upkeep of public flower beds and green areas.
Removal of weeds, trimming of bushes, and maintaining general cleanliness in beautification zones.
- Maintenance of Decorative Features:
Monitoring and light upkeep of items such as planters, benches, and decorative signage.
- Community Engagement:
Encouraging public participation through volunteer events or clean-up days. Coordinating with local organizations or schools for service projects.

Budget and Funding:
To ensure that no volunteer incurs personal expense, the following annual budget is proposed:
Annual Budget Allocation: $1,500
Flowers, Plants, Soil & Mulch: $900
Tools & Equipment (trowels, gloves, watering cans, etc.): $300 Decorative/Seasonal Items: $200
Miscellaneous (signage, community event supplies, etc.): $100
Funds will be managed through the Village's general fund, with receipts and reimbursement procedures coordinated through the Fiscal Officers office.
Support and Oversight:
The committee will operate under the guidance and support of the Mayor’s Office. Any major projects or expenses outside of the approved budget will require prior Council approval.
